Kendallville Public Library Purchases New Microfilm Reader with LSTA Grant

Kendallville, IN – The Kendallville Public Library recently received a $10,000 grant to purchase a new microfilm reader for the Russell Frehse Genealogy Room. This new equipment, called the U-Scan +, replaces an older model that is no longer being serviced or manufactured. The U-Scan + offers a crisper digital image, important to researchers. “It’s the latest model of scanners on the market,” said Adult Services Manager Mindy Patterson. “With the U-Scan +, it’s easy to load the film, and items can be digitized and saved in a variety of formats using the touch PC. In addition to microfilm, it scans microfiche, cards, ApCards, 35mm film strips, color slides and more.” QuickStart touchscreen controls, easy movement of the film and the ability to simply frame and crop images make it user friendly, said Patterson. This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Indiana State Library. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Its mission is to grow and sustain a “Nation of Learners” because life-long learning is essential to a democratic society and individual success.
